What is the Right Career for me?
Everyday I meet few teens along with their concerned and confused parents for one of the biggest mysteries of their child’s life , ” What’s the right Career for him/her?”
Yes it’s a mystery and I know most of you shall agree with me on this.
I shall not deny the fact of being in the same pool during my teens, but a fortunate & safe backup of family buisness always helped me to ignore the real seriousness of the same.
A study conducted by a professor from Washington in 2013, stated that of 2,30,000 professionals across 189 countries survey – 91% of them didn’t enjoy their profession. Now that’s a serious figure & personally I’ve experienced the same around me.
While reading and researching something clicked me and the topic of Career became my passion.
Researching for more than 4 years and catering more than 4000 students across various schools we (Holistree)created realistic methods of reaching the destined field/ career.
Let me share few tips which shall help you choosing “The CAREER” -:
Tip #1 while choosing the right career: Introspection.
As SCARY as it sounds, it is the first and most important task. Go back to your life and make a note of following -:
- Impactful incidents and your response
- Your natural behavioural pattern to various situations and people
- Aim (Strong/Blurry)
- Strength / Weakness
- Likes/ Dislikes
- Desired lifestyle
- Thoughts consuming majority of your time currently. (Friends,Relationships,Events/Incidents)
To start with, these questions can be quite frustrating and confusing, but this is where you need to be persistent/patient if you really want to find something you will love forever.
You may take help of matured people close to you or professionals like us, who shall help/support you with the same.
Make a note of all the answers & will share later in this article how to use them in choosing a career.
Tip #2 while choosing the right career: Social Structure
India is a country where decisions are socially impacted and thus it becomes one of the most important factor in understanding the same.
Be authentic about your social culture and background and answer following basic questions -:
- What you can and can’t (Family Rules)
- Parents Nature (Likes and Dislikes)
- Your Relationship with them
- Financial Stand
Tip #3 while choosing the right career: List of Careers
Make a list of all the careers which attract you even a bit, for whatsoever reasons.
You are required to spend some good time on making the list of maximum number of professions which just increases the probability of finding that Career.
Use following resources for the same -:
- Google (Ofcourse)
- People ( Here every 2nd person is chanakya)
- Professionals
- Career Experts
Tip #4 while choosing the right career: Research
Now this is where I found most of the teens/parents struggle.
Self research is the most important parameter which unfolds lot of answers existing in your head about the above listed careers.
You believe a completely random perspective of what your parents, uncle ,aunty ,cousin, friend suggests to you along with some random google data and come to conclusion which never works.(Believe me on this)
Following are few research questions which you should get answers for every career listed above -:
- Study Path
- Basic Subjects in the syllabus
- Duration of study
- Finance required
- Actual work in the profession ( there’s major difference between what we study and actual work in many professions)
- Qualities / Skills required
- Basic Salary Structure in the profession
Tip #5 while choosing the right career: Using above data.
Now once you have all the above data do the following -:
- Compare qualities / skills required in the profession with yours.(Strength/Weakness)
- Check whether the profession meets your desired lifestyle.
- Finances available and required.
- Subjects (Likes / Dislikes)
- Is the actual work providing you some KICK.
- Visualising big about the profession or confined thinking.
- Parental opinion.
- Do the above for all the professions listed
- See which professions matches most to you.
